Appropriate Books for Technical Writer
Books for Technical Writers Recently I saw a very informative and interesting discussion “Appropriate Books for Technical Writer” on one of the Technical Writer Forum started by Quan li ,a student from China. This is one of the frequently asked questions on the different forum in different way, so thought to compile comments for myself and visitors of my blog for future references. I have posted the comments as it is because i fear by simply listing the books name i may lose the essence which is created by complete discussion. —————————————————————————————————————————– Hello, everyone. I am a technical writer and trying to know more about the career. I’ve collected some books for technical writers, but I don’t know which one is better, could you give me some suggestions? The books are as follows:1.BBC – New Writing Style Guide2.English for Writing Research Papers3.Grammatically Correct The writer’s essential guide to punctuation spelling style usage and grammar 1997 14.Microsoft Press – Microsoft Manual Of Style For Technical Publications 3Rd Edition Microsoft 5.Technical Writing – Manual Of Style6.The Chicago Manual of Style. The Essential Guide for Writers Editors and Publishers 15th ed 20067.The Online English Grammar8.The Web Content Style Guide. An Essential Reference for Online Writers Editors and Managers9.Writing In English A Practical Handbook for Scientific and Technical Writers10 “How to Write a Computer Manual: A Handbook of Software Documentation” by Jonathan ———————————————————————————————————————– John Sarra •Qian, I would suggest you do a search on Amazon.com for “Technical Writing”. The books you list are mostly references. There are a number of books, such as “Technical Writing 101” that will also give you “how to” information. Read the reviews and see what others say. That will point you to books that may interest you. ——————————————————————————————————————— Elizabeth Emerson •Definitely, if you have to select one, choose this one: *Microsoft Press – Microsoft Manual Of Style For Technical Publications 3Rd Edition Microsoft This is a standard style manual and a reference book that should be available in every technical writing department. Now 4th edition is also available. ——————————————————————————————————– Adria Quinones •I also like Sun’s “Read Me First,” as a contrast to Microsoft’s Manual of Style. Note that Microsoft published their 4th ed. earlier this year.http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/book.aspx?id=150532 ———————————————————————————————————————– Robert Lauriston •Clear, concise, correct, and comprehensive. Is there a book that will teach a new writer why you need a style manual? I use Chicago, which is excellent, comprehensive, and available online. Since I’m in the software industry, I use the Microsoft Manual of Style, 4th ed., which you can get in a PDF, it’s not in the same league as Chicago but it’s the best and most comprehensive and up to date for software documentation (though useless for anything else). Neither will teach you anything about tech writing as a career. Don’t use a UK style manual (such as BBC) if you’re writing American English and don’t use a US style manual (such as Chicago) if you’re writing British / International English. ——————————————————————————————————————– Craig Cardimon •”The Insider’s Guide to Technical Writing,” by Krista Van Laan (XML Press, 2012), discusses tech writing as a career. I highly recommend it for describing the ups and downs of tech writing. ————————————————————————————————————————- Zvi Eynan •I would recommend “Handbook of Technical Writing” by Alred/Brusaw/OlioI little bit old fashioned but mostly usefulGo to amazon for more tittles ————————————————————————————————————————- Delio Destro •As a general guideline I like “Developing Quality Technical Information”ISBN 0131477498and of course, the bases of the basics: “The Elements of Technical Writing” ISBN 0020130856 ————————————————————————————————————————- Ed Mikula •Once you are comfortable stringing words together, you might read “Dynamics in Document Design” and The Elements of Typographic Style. ————————————————————————————————————————- James Barakaat •As a former Professor at Kaplan University, I recommend: Kaplan Technical Writing: A Resource for Technical Writers at All Levels [Paperback]Carrie Hannigan (Author), Carrie Wells (Author), Carolyn Stevenson (Author), Tanya Peterson (Author), Diane Martinez (Author). Also, Technical Writing 101: A Real-World Guide to Planning and Writing Technical Documentation, Second Edition [Paperback] Alan S. Pringle I studied Technical Writing and Technical Editing at Miami University with Paul V Anderson who wrote: Technical Communication by Paul V. Anderson, 7th Edition. You can get them at Amazon.com ————————————————————————————————————————– Naci Simsek •If you have an apple device, you can also check for technical writing courses from ITunes U or either you can check wikiversity for the same topic. ————————————————————————————————————————– Dick Miller •For a focus on usability and the user experience (not often taught in tech writing classes), see STC Usability and User Experience Community’s Usability Bookshelf at http://www.stcsig.org/usability/resources/bookshelf/index.html. —————————————————————————————————————————— Mark Baker •All the best books for technical communicators to read are not about technical communications. I recommend: * Politics and the English Language, George Orwell* Everything is Miscellaneous, David Weinberger* Too Big to Know, David Weinberger* Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath* The Social Life of Information, Duguid and Brown ————————————————————————————————————————— Saul Carliner •If you are looking for books to strengthen your skills, you’ll need different books for different purposes. (1) Start with a general book that provides an overview of the process. Paul Anderson’s, Mary Lay’s, or William S. Pfeiffer’s books provide excellent introductions to the general field of technical writing, whether writing as a full-time professional writer or a technical professional like an an engineer or scientist who writes as part of his job. (2) Expand into books that provide an overview of technical communication from a communicator’s point of view. Although older, Barnum & Carliner’s Techniques for Technical Communicators still has some value. (3) Go deeper into writing, with books like Strunk & White’s Elements of Style and Williams’ and Columb’s lesser-known, but equally useful, Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grade, the IBM book mentioned earlier, as well as books that focus on specific writing in specific genres (such as the book mentioned earlier on how to write a user manual or Horton’s or Carliner’s books on designing e-learning programs) and media (such as the second edition of Janice, Redish’s book on writing online content) (4) Develop skills in editing–including skills in using a style guide. When determination meets the fate- My journey
How to start as a technical writer- My Journey It is was a regular working day in the office until I received a call !!! a call that suddenly dragged me a few years back when I was struggling to start my life, once again. Once again because after getting a fitness certificate post series of 3 major and few minor operations only in few years, now I was allowed to sit for few hours and travel without any support, but it was advisable to carry a stick to prevent undue pressure on the fractured fumer and tibia and the implant incorporated in it. After getting a wellness certificate a big question that bogs me down was “what next”? Being a pharma graduate I was supposed to join marketing, R&D, production but all of these options were closed for me because at that time I was not physically fit for any this job in a nutshell pharma sector had closed the door for me. “What next”? What to do? Back to college again for masters or MBA? Will after selling out a few lakhs and years companies will hire me? Not sure. Already my parents were in debt due to my operation and sister marriage, so how much it was prudent for me to bet on higher education. I was not sure, then start looking for industries which can hire me…in this quest my brother –in –law (jija ji) asked me “if you can write in times of India and win a bike, why don’t you take writing as a full-time career”. Not a bad idea!!! An idea can change your life, it was then he introduced me to one of his friend sister who was then a tech writer in Nokia. After talking to her I was fully convinced this is the field where I will get job satisfaction and my love for word will sure help me to excel in this field. Again the question remains the same where to start from? Series of phone calls to the friends, friends of friends, and their friends to get a clue what is technical writing is all about, eligibility, future, growth, and many other questions and after getting every question answered, the battle starts to find a good institution from where I can start my journey as a writer. Few good institutes were there in the town at that time I was in Bangalore but their fees were not affordable for me, finally joined a small but good institution. when my syllabus was about to finish I start looking for a job, get my resume done, posted on different job portals, and finally, I get a call for an interview CALL !!! Yes, call from the same company whose representative call me today and that call motivates me to write this blog but yes nature and tone of the call were different. I appeared but I failed in that interview. Today just after a few years when I got a call from the same company with the offering for the post of project manager with handsome increment, the condition was only to handle there telecom domain projects. They lured me with all possible means to relocate to Bangalore. I hope this happened just because of the blessing of parents, god grace, and probably my never to die attitude, determination to come out from spare to sunshine. I believe when one door is close 100 open probably I’m one classical example of it. My only motto to write this blog to stand with those friends who are down due to some of the reasons, it is not at all self-promotional.
Content Development Process
A well-approved saying is- content is the King, and to be a king content should have the quality of King to rule by and a well-planned flow, researched, and depth content to impact the masses across the globe. In this post, you will learn in detail about the content development process which will help you to organize your content development journey. Everything on the web is a content but not everything is reliable, backed with facts, and has the capability to hold the audience for a long time. Only quality matters and the rest is garbage. Quality and authenticity grabs the eyeball and gives the content the required attention for which it is called the King. For an outstanding content, it is necessary to follow the basic steps required to produce a content that is relevant, connects to the audience, and creates an impact. Content development involves five steps that would help to create and develop an awesome content for any business, blog or web platform. These are simple but yet rewarding steps for your quality content. If followed with sincerity the end result is definitely going to be the masterpiece. PLAN: Beginning of a task with a plan is the work half done. When we plan to write a content we should consider 4 W’s: If I am writing a medically oriented blog on travel website no one is going to read it. Writing for kids but in a complex language, it’s a waste of time. If we get to know the reader these problems can be avoided at the very first step. Your content will be better perceived by the reader. Clarity on the topic lays the foundation for further research on the same direction. Getting the relevant data only happens when we have a clear picture of what to write. We have to be clear whether the writing fulfils the business goals and the desired results we are expecting. The writing should go in the direction that gives positive results towards the expected goal. Outdated writing is close to irrelevant writing. Keep yourself updated in your niche and it will add value to your content. You can read more about planning here. RESEARCH: After planning the writing, a lot of research work needs to be done. It includes Research gives you the data and facts based on which you can feed your content. Make a checklist of your research and analyse it. You can take a help of free or paid keyword research tools. Invest some time on Quora to understand what your audience is reading. WRITING: Well-equipped with the prior planning and research now it’s time to develop the content. The most crucial part, because the deviations must be sidelined and the focus should be on writing the relevant content. Think before writing and follow few thumb rules to add an awesomeness to your creation. Put yourself in the reader’s place and most of the answers will be clear to you. People look for a content that is concise but with clarity. Correct grammar increases credibility. Complex writing can confuse the readers, sometimes causing misinterpretation. Positive writing energises the reader. Whatever you write should follow the protocol of that kind of writing. EDIT: Any writing needs a proofreading. Proofreading ensures that no mistake has been done in writing the content. In case it happened, edit and correct it. It also gives us an overview as to how the content feels to the reader. Is it compelling enough or just another similar content on the web? In this step, we can correct all the flaws and present an awesome content to the viewer. Learn more about editing. PUBLISH: It is the step that helps us reach the audience, particularly the target audience whom we want to read it and react. Publish your content on different channels where the inflow of your relevant audience is maximum. Social media acts as an important tool here to spread your content to the remotest corner. Guest blogging is one of the methods to target new readers. Read more about guest blogging. Conclusion- Think, explore, act, revise and spread is the fundamental of content development life cycle. Create a content following these parameters and be a content master. Happy Writing!!

Connecting the dots between technical documentation and product marketing content In this article, you will learn more about what technical content writing and marketing content writing is all about and what is it not about in today’s market trends. You will see how technical content serves as your product marketing weapon. We will also discuss is it good to consider merging technical and marketing content to one content accessible to customers. Please reach out to me on sadhana.technicalwriter@gmail.com. While we pitch into the discussion of how technical documentation is your company’s secretmarketing weapon, let us understand in the current industry trends, what technical content is allabout and what is it not about. What technical content is about? Technical content focuses on providing useful information about how to use the product, what’snew, use case driven, and how the product addresses user’s pain points. Technical content is no more about: From decades, technical documentation remained as content that is accessible to customers afterproduct purchase. While marketing content is published and available to customers right fromproduct pre-launch phase to ready to go live. However, over the years this tradition is changing. Technical documentation is becoming the keycontent that customers are referring to prior purchasing of the product. The trend of the technical document being limited as PDF format and with restricted access is changing. Technicalmaterials are made available in HTML form and on all platforms for ease of access. Seeing from the content marketing view, customers are no more relying on marketing materialsas the reference before pre-purchase but are more interested to check out the product technicaldocumentation. Why technical documentation serves as marketing weapon? How to improve attention and importance for technical documentation the same asmarketing materials Technical content is your product’s marketing weapon, it becomes important to deliver product documentation that is not only of high quality but also that makes the content visually delightful. Few of the key points to consider improving technical documentation in terms of marketingmaterial are: Should companies combine marketing and technical content together? While we figure out whether to combine marketing content and technical documentation, let usunderstand in the current industry trends, what content marketing is all about and what is it notabout. Off likely, there is a fewer audience for marketing content and more focus is on technical content in the current trends. Also, we see that technical content is eventually becoming a marketing weapon.
